The Problem with OEM Manuals
Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) have a vested interest in selling spare parts and protecting themselves from liability. As a result, OEM maintenance schedules are often hyper-aggressive. If you follow the manual blindly, you will over-maintain your equipment, driving up labor costs and introducing "maintenance-induced failures" (breaking things while trying to inspect them).
Time-Based vs. Usage-Based PMs

Steps to Optimization
- Log Everything: You cannot optimize a PM schedule without data. Every breakdown must be logged with a root cause.
- Identify the Failure Mode: Is the failure age-related? (e.g., a belt wearing out). If it's random (e.g., an electronic board failing), preventative maintenance won't help; you need condition monitoring.
- Adjust Frequencies: If you perform a quarterly PM on a gearbox and find the oil is still pristine three times in a row, extend the PM to semi-annually.
