Understanding Cylinder Dynamics

A double-acting cylinder produces different forces on extension versus retraction. Why? Because during retraction, the physical volume of the rod takes up space inside the cylinder, reducing the effective surface area that the pressurized air (or fluid) can act upon.

The 10% Frictional Loss Rule

Theoretical force calculations (like the ones above) assume a perfect, frictionless system. In reality, internal seal friction consumes a portion of the generated force.

Engineering Best Practice:

Always subtract 10% to 15% from the theoretical force calculation to account for internal friction and pressure drops in fittings when sizing a cylinder for a real-world application.
